Rukungiri Health Center IV has celebrated a significant milestone in maternal and child healthcare by successfully performing its first Caesarean Section (C-section). Both the mother and newborn are reported to be in excellent health, marking a pivotal moment for the facility and the community it serves.
Prior to this achievement, Rukungiri Health Center IV lacked the capability to provide surgical services for expectant mothers requiring operative deliveries. The successful operation underscores the government’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare for all Ugandans.
Dr. Maureen Atwikirize, the In-Charge of Rukungiri Health Center IV, expressed her joy and gratitude at this accomplishment. “Today has been one of my happiest and most fulfilling days as a medical professional,” she said. “This success is the result of months of preparation, dedication, and teamwork. We are thankful to God and to the Government of Uganda for equipping and operationalizing our theatre after a long period without one.”
Dr. Atwikirize also acknowledged the unwavering support from the Rukungiri Municipal Council Administration and praised her dedicated medical team for their professionalism. She urged the government and stakeholders to expedite the construction of a new maternity ward, which will provide a more comfortable space for mothers and enhance overall care.
Dr. Darius Namanya, a Medical Officer at the facility, highlighted the operational benefits of having a functional theatre. “Previously, patients needing surgical intervention had to be referred to other hospitals, often at high cost and inconvenience,” he explained. “Now, we can improve continuity of care and professional satisfaction among health workers.”

Dr. Davis Ahabwe, Principal Medical Officer, commended the continuous support from the Government of Uganda. “This is a great blessing to our community. It will reduce transport costs, improve access to emergency obstetric care, and ultimately save lives,” he stated.
Midwife Kasande Lovence reported that both the mother and baby are stable and recovering well. The Government of Uganda remains committed to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that every Ugandan, especially mothers and children, has access to safe, affordable, and quality healthcare services.
