Jailed senior police officer Nixon Agasiirwe Karuhanga has applied for bail before the High Court of Uganda, as he awaits trial over the alleged 2015 murder of former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Kagezi Namazzi.
Appearing before the Criminal Division in Kampala, Agasiirwe presented three sureties, including two family members and a friend.
The proposed sureties are businessman Aloisius Muhangi, an environmental researcher and consultant Kurareva Levi, and land dealer Mugumya Leemani.
Presiding judge Isaac Muwata has given the prosecution one week to file submissions in response to the bail application.
In his application, Agasiirwe argues that his continued detention violates his constitutional right to a speedy and fair trial, as well as the presumption of innocence.
Through his lawyers of Akampurira and Partners, Agasiirwe states that he was arrested in May 2025 and later charged with murder at the Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court in June 2025.
The 54-year-old former senior police officer says his advanced age, fixed place of residence, and availability of substantial sureties justify his release on bail.
He has also assured court that he will comply with all bail conditions and attend trial whenever required.
Agasiirwe further told court that his prolonged detention at Luzira Prison without trial poses risks to his health and livelihood, noting that he is a family man with dependents and permanent investments in the country.
The matter will return to court on March 5th, 2026, for mention and to fix a date for the ruling.
Agasiirwe is accused of murdering Joan Kagezi Namazzi, who was shot dead in 2015 at Kyanja in Nakawa Division.
