In a bid to guarantee peaceful elections, Rukungiri District officials held an extraordinary security meeting today at the district headquarters. Chaired by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nsubuga Steven Bewayo, the meeting brought together the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abasi Byakagaba, the Minister for Security Major Gen Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, aspiring parliamentary candidates, and the Rukungiri district security committee.
The meeting comes in the wake of recent challenges experienced during the National Resistance Movement (NRM) elections in the Kigezi Region, prompting local leaders to ensure that proper security measures are in place for the upcoming elections.
IGP Byakagaba reassured the people of Rukungiri that the police are prepared to maintain order, promising sufficient deployment to ensure a peaceful electoral environment.
Emphasizing the importance of following guidelines set by the NRM electoral commission, Byakagaba reminded candidates and their supporters that adherence to the law is crucial for a smooth electoral process.
Security Minister Maj Gen Muhwezi Katugugu who was also in attendance echoed the IGP’s sentiments, urging candidates to unite as members of the same political family within the NRM. Muhwezi warned against any attempts to disrupt the peace, stating that violators would face immediate arrest.
Hon Elisa Rutahigwa, the Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, raised concerns about security challenges that have arisen during the campaign season.
He highlighted the unique situation of having two prominent candidates, in the race, which necessitates heightened security measures.
RDC Bewayo expressed gratitude for the IGP’s commitment to enhancing security in the district. He encouraged candidates to adhere to the guidelines, particularly regarding campaign rally timings, urging them to conclude activities by 6 PM to ensure community peace.
