Teachers’ little pay discussion dominates UNATU Annual Delegate’s conference

NEWS– Leaders of teachers from different parts of the country are in Kabale for the 19th Annual Delegate’s conference.

The ongoing two day conference organised by Uganda National Teachers’ Union UNATO the umbrella that brings together teachers in the country started on 10th December 2024 at Agaba centre in Kabale municipality.

Philbert Baguma, the UNATU General Secretary while speaking to our reporter noted that this year’s conference focuses on different issues which include Teachers’ salaries among others.

Baguma revealed that Teachers’ little pay has not only hindered development but also the upgrading in their education careers as required.

On Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni’s directive to bar government teachers from teaching in private schools, the UNATU General Secretary stressed that its impossible since teachers are always looking for survival due to poor pay by the government.

 Arinaitwe Rwakajara, Workers’ representative in Parliament who was the guest of honor urged teachers to take part in politics if they are to benefit from the country’s leadership.

Rwakajara condemned the government’s vice of enhancing salaries for some teachers leaving others behind saying that this creates gaps which affect the teaching process.

This year’s event is being held under the theme: Valuing Teachers’ Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education.

The 19th Annual Delegates’ Conference of the Uganda National Teachers Union hosted in Kabale Municipality, is the first of its kind in the region.
