KAMPALA– The 11th Parliamentary Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has called for responsible and sustainable environmental use to prevent catastrophic floods like that witnessed on Wednesday along the Lake Victoria Basin, resulting in the loss of seven people.
Tayebwa noted that such catastrophes aren’t discriminative on whether one was protecting or destroying the environment.
His remarks come at the time when recently, Parliament approved Shs3.267Bn in Supplementary Budget funding, to support Internal Security Organisation (ISO) to carry out operations to stop citizens from wetland abuse.

The Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi called on the government to reach out to the families of the seven people who lost their lives in Kampala floods as well as to provide immediate relief to the families camped in places of worship, after their homes became submerged in the floods.
Ssenyonyi also expressed dismay over what he termed as discriminative enforcement of environmental laws, citing the eviction in Lubigi wetlands, where homes of the poor people were razed down, while the rich continue to construct along drainage channels in and around Kampala.
