The Police in Kanungu district have reported a tragic incident involving mob justice that occurred on May 27, 2025, at Kyimugote cell in Kirima sub-county. The case, classified as murder by mob, was brought to the attention of law enforcement by the local sub-county chairperson, Kamahanga, as confirmed by Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate.
According to reports, the events unfolded in the early hours of the morning. At approximately 3 AM, an unknown individual or individuals allegedly stole three sheep from the home of Twongirwe Eliya, a resident of Kajumo cell. Upon discovering the theft, Eliya alerted neighbors, prompting a swift search for the suspected culprits.
During the search, a group of villagers apprehended a man identified as Turyatunga Obed, who was found in possession of the stolen sheep. In a shocking turn of events, Obed was subjected to mob violence and subsequently lynched by the crowd.
Authorities responded to the scene, where a team of homicide officers conducted an investigation. The body of the deceased was transported to Kanungu Health Center IV for a post-mortem examination. Additionally, several sticks believed to have been used in the assault were collected as evidence, along with the three sheep that had been reported stolen.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the mob action, and police have stated that inquiries are ongoing. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of mob justice in some communities, raising concerns about the rule of law and the need for effective policing to prevent such occurrences.
