NEWS– The Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja is in the Elgon subregion for a working visit.
The 3 day working visit aims at overseeing a complete relocation of people from disaster high areas that is ongoing.
A stakeholders meeting attended by leaders from all districts in the Elgon subregion together with Rt. Hon. Nabbanja agreed on mechanisms of ensuring immediate relocation of all people in disaster prone areas to already gazzeted safe places.
The Prime Minister noted that the current relocation phase features a new cash transfer policy, which provides each household with shs17 million shillings (shs10 million from the government and shs7 million from development partner GiveDirectly), along with two acres of land in Bunambutye.
This policy aims to empower families to build their own homes compared to the previous model of providing fully constructed houses.
According to Nabbanja, the government’s target is to resettle over 5000 households from all disaster prone areas.
She expressed her gratitude to the leaders and stakeholders at all levels for heeding to the call and the commitment to ensure success of this exercise.
