RUKUNGIRI-Residents of Nyakishenyi Sub County in Rukungiri district have expressed their concern over the delay by the government to renovate the main bridge that connects Rukungiri and Kanungu districts.
The bridge is Burambira and the most affected areas are Shogashoga, Burambira, Gonyo, Gugoro, Kiganda, and Kagongyi all from Nyakishenyi Sub County Rukungiri district.
According to the residents, Burambira Bridge got damaged six years ago and after government keeping dead ears on the matter, they were forced to make a temporary one for their survival.
Residents continued that now the state of the bridge is out of their hands explaining that they informed all district authorities but no positive response has been done.
They revealed that while soliciting votes from them, Hon. Naboth Namanya the area legislator promised to work on their bridge immediately after assuming the office but wonder how he can’t even communicate something they say it is hurtful since they had hopes from him.
Residents however narrated that they might not participate in coming general elections as they are usually left out in terms of service delivery by the leaders they vote for.
Tukamushaba Anibo, boda boda cyclist operating in Burambira said that some of his colleagues have drowned in the river after motorcycles they were travelling in plunged into the river due to damaged bridge.
Mbasa Manton, Ninsiima Evelyn, Binomugisha Mackline, Rt. Rev. Zadoki Tindiwensi and Barekye Pauson some of the residents told our reporter that the business in the same areas is on stand still since they can’t transport their produce to market centers.
Ainebyona Brian Bantu district councilor representing Nyakishenyi Sub County said he is working hand in hand with other leaders to rescue people affected by the same bridge and has already visited district engineer’s office for the same matter.
Ainebyona however said that the government should intervene immediately before people lose their lives over the poor state of Burambira Bridge.
Asiimwe Lovence speaker Nyakishenyi Sub County also said that their council has been informing responsible authorities but nothing has been done.
Asiimwe added that children might lose their lives after government opens up schools since most of them use the same bridge.
She continued that service delivery in Nyakishenyi is poor explaining that most of them especially schools and hospitals are in long distances which she said that is unfair
