A suspect has today been shot dead by a police officer on duty after resisting arrest in Mbarara.
According to Rwizi Region police spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira two Police Officers N56098 CPL Agaba Benson and N63315 PC Tumuhimbise Boaz had gone to effect an arrest of a suspect of threatening Violence on SDREF: 20/25/7/2023 and 21/25/7/2023 at Rubindi Police Station.
The incident happened on Wednesday morning in Akatoma village Kibingo Parish Kagongi subcounty Kashari North Mbarara District.
Kasasira says the suspect now deceased Gerald Tubigarukwamu a resident of Akatoma village Kibingo Parish Kagongi subcounty Kashari North Mbarara District was approached by the officers on duty and the LC1 Chairman to be escorted to the Police Station but he instead resorted to chasing one of the officer with a panga with intentions of harming armed officers which prompted the officers to discharge bullets and one of the bullets hit the suspect in the head killing him instantly .
Julius Taremwa ,the chairman Akatooma cell revealed that on Tuesday, the deceased threatened to kill Tumwine, a situation that prompted him to report the matter to the office of the local council Chairperson who further forwarded the matter to Rubindi Police station.
Godliva Beberireho, the wife of the deceased told the press that her husband returned home on Tuesday not in his usual ways and started threatening to kill her over unknown matters.
Baberireho adds that this prompted her to flee the home at around 3PM adding that she was surprised to receive news that her husband was shot dead in the wee hours of Wednesday morning as he attempted to injure policemen who had came to arrest him.
The body of the deceased was conveyed to the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem .Both weapons have been exhibited for ballistics to ascertain the shooter
Meanwhile CPL Agaba Benson is in Police Custody to help in the investigations.
