KAMPALA- Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital has decried the increased cases of Monkey pox, expressing fears that these patients are being mismanaged because the government has only provided gauze and iodine for treatment.
The warning was issued by Dr. Deus Twesigye, Director, Mbarara Regional Hospital while appearing before Parliament’s Health Committee to consider the Hospital’s 2025/26 Ministerial Policy Statement.
Dr. Twesigye added that the Hospital failed to feed the Monkey Pox patients, and are now catering for their own meals.
He said that the isolation unit is already full, and new patients are being admitted in tents.
He further added that the isolation unit is already full and the hospital has started admitting Monkeypox patients in the tents.
Dr. Twesigye decried the lack of Government support in helping the Hospital deal with this plight.
The administrators of Mbarara Hospital are also appealing to Parliament to spearhead the elevation of the hospital’s status to match that of Mulago National Referral Hospital, owing to the super specialized services being offered to patients.
Administrators note that the continued labeling of Mbarara Hospital in the same category as other regional referral hospitals has hampered its access to some commodities from National Medical Stores.
