KABALE-Kigezi region journalists were asked to challenge the recently amended computer misuse law if the media profession is to survive,
The call was made by Mr Robert Ssempala the HRNJ executive director in his closing remarks to the media practitioners who attended the two day workshop organised by the human rights network for journalists ug at cephas inn in kabale municipality.
Mr Robert expressed to the practitioners that if this law is accepted it will affect everyone the media inclusive.
The Computer Misuse (Amendment) Bill, 2022, was presented by Kampala Central Member of Parliament Mohammed Nsereko as a private member’s bill, on grounds that existing laws do not specifically address the regulation of information sharing on social media.
It was recently amended by president Yoweri Museveni.Mr John Baptist wasswa a member of HRNJ also a media trainer implored journalists to read the laws that govern journalism in order to defend themselves in case of any media violations .
Mr John also talked about plagiarism referring to it as an intellectual theft warning journalists about it stressing that some journalists tend to use others ‘content without attributing their hard work.
He therefore advised journalists to ensure are equipped with skills to do researched journalism and avoid plagiarism.
This training was aimed at skilling journalists with ethical conduct and professionalism .it started on Wednesday 19th October and ended on Thursday 20th October.
It was attended by the journalists from the districts of kabale,Kisoro,Kanungu,Rukiga,Rubanda,and Rukungiri .
