RUKUNGIRI- At least 180 households across five villages in Kabingo Parish, Buhunga Sub County Rukungiri district are jubilating following the commissioning of a piped water supply project.
Kihanga Water Supply system was commissioned yesterday by the Rujumbura County Member of Parliament and Security Minister Hon. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi after holding a community-based monitoring and accountability forum popularly known as Baraza with Kabingo parish residents at Ikuniro Catholic Church.
Barazas are aimed at discussing development projects and new initiatives, focusing on key areas such as roads, water provision, electricity and other related services. The beneficiary villages of Kihanga Water Supply system include Kabingo, Kigaruko, Kirimbi, Kagando and Ikuniro all in Kabingo Parish Buhunga Sub County.
Speaking during the commissioning, Hon. Jim Muhwezi told residents that they should use safe and clean water to improve sanitation in their homes and health in addition to improving their livelihood like growing crops and livestock farming.
According to Muhwezi, people should elect leaders who care about resolving their issues rather than those who are only interested in their own interests.

According to Mugumya Robert, manager South Western Umbrella for water and sanitation, the project is valued at 95 million shillings, and the cost of water jerry cans will be 50 shillings for both household connection and Public Stand Pipes (PSP).
Mugumya urged beneficiary residents to use the commissioned water consistently and increase their household income.

Orireta Gorreti and Nshabanoha Brinia, some of the beneficiary residents revealed that for years, they have been collecting water from an open well, sharing it with animals, and exposing their families to waterborne diseases.
The residents however, anticipated improved hygiene and a reduction in disease outbreaks since the piped water supply project was commissioned.
