District leaders asked for more action in Combating climate change

Climate change has been attributed to global warming and human encroachment on the natural environment.

This was revealed by the Executive Director Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) Dr Bob Alex Ogwang last week during the official opening of a two day western Uganda sub-national climate forum for training of trainers at hotel Triangle in Mbarara city Organized by UNMA in partnership with World Food Program WFP and Food and Agriculture Organization FAO.

During his opening remarks, Dr Ogwang revealed that climate change comes with both negative and positive effects like floods, drought which normally claims lives of people, animals in addition to destroying crops which later results in famine.

Dr Ogwang further called upon the participants to ensure the utilization of knowledge acquired from the training, and put in action to help communities on how to utilize weather forecast information provided by UNMA so that they can be able to plant in real season and harvest more.

However, speaking during the closure of training on Friday 23rd Sept. 2022, Kyegegwa District chairperson lc5 Mr Byamukama John called upon the trainees who included the Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs), Lc5 chairpersons, district production officers, water officers, medical personnel and the media to ensure the last end user who is the farmer gets knowledge about the weather forecast provided by Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) so that they plant in the right time and plan for their animals accordingly.

Mr Byamukama called for the conservation of wetlands that harbor water during the rainy season in order to control floods that have caused catastrophes in Uganda.

The Kamwenge district boss Joseph karungi hailed UNMA for organizing such training to empower district leaders with knowledge on weather forecast, saying it’s going to benefit the end users especially farmers and later alone benefit the Government to achieve its sustainable development  goal  tasks of eliminating poverty and hunger.

FAO representative Dr Antony Kagoro thanked UNMA for organizing the training to empower districts with weather forecast information and pledged full support on behalf of FAO to UNMA in a way to continue the training.

On behalf of the World Food Program, the  country director Dr Nancy called upon the participants to utilize the knowledge acquired in the training to help the farmers to understand the climatic statistics and information.
