Yesterday evening, we laid to rest Hon. Jolly Mugisha at her family’s burial grounds in Mitooma District. It was a very sad day for all of us who loved and cherished her.

‘Mama Jolly,’ as we fondly called her, has been our Deputy President in charge of Western Uganda. She has been a mother to us all—very kind, soft-spoken, and always smiling. She was passionate and compassionate.

Her dedication to the struggle for freedom in Uganda was unquestionable. She stood firm against all attempts by the regime to corrupt her, most notably during the time I was under house arrest when the dictator attempted to meet her thinking it would make her capitulate and abandon us.

She played a pivotal role in opening the doors of Western Uganda to the National Unity Platform, effortlessly debunking the regime’s propaganda that our movement was confined to Buganda. Indeed, in word and action, she unified us and demonstrated that NUP’s vision transcends regional and ethnic boundaries.

Her loved ones, while eulogising her, highlighted her many noble contributions to our country even before she joined NUP. But many of them observed that they had never seen her as invested, fulfilled and at peace with herself as she was during her time in NUP.

Mama Jolly’s legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive for a better Uganda. Her memory will live on in our hearts, and in the continued fight for freedom and justice.

Once again, we deeply appreciate her family, mostly her children who accepted to share Mama Jolly with us while she lived, allowed us to be by her side when she was sick, and permitted that we take center stage in sending her off. THANK YOU.

I am grateful to all of you leaders at different levels and all comrades who joined in the activities for her send-off.

Very importantly, we are very grateful to the NUP Diaspora who quickly mobilized themselves and made a significant contribution towards her send-off ceremonies. THANK YOU.

Rest in peace, our dear Deputy President. We will do our best to vindicate the time and energy you dedicated to Uganda while you were still alive. May God grant that the people of Uganda eventually achieve the kind of country for which you made innumerable sacrifices.
