NEWS- The territorial police in Rukungiri are investigating circumstances surrounding the mob that killed a suspected robber with whom a gun was recovered.
ASP Elly Maate the Kigezi Region Police spokesman told the press that on Tuesday February 25th 2025 at around 2030 hours, information was received from an a responsible citizen who called the OC FFU (Operations) Rukungiri CPS, IP Tukamwesiga Nicholas, regarding a mob action at Butimba on Karegyesa road Rukungiri town involving unidentified thugs armed with an AK-47.
Police responded swiftly to the crime scene, where a body was found lying in a pool of blood alongside an AK-47 rifle.
The gun was identified as UG POL 565810907-27608, loaded with 28 rounds of ammunition, whose firearm had been robbed by unknown thugs from No. 70464 PC Adriko Benard on the 19/01/2025 at his beat near Kabale University – Rukungiri Branch at Nyakaina Cell Nyakaina Ward Buyanja Town Council Rukungiri district.
The deceased was identified as Akampurira Marc Kamp a resident of Nyakina village Buyanja sub county, based on a copy of his National ID found in his wallet. The body was taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for Postmortem.
Primary information is that, the thugs were two in number armed with one rifle and robbed one Agaba Kenneth hardware shop eight million Ugx on gun point by shooting one bullet, but fortunately didn’t injure anybody at Karegyesa road within Rukungiri township and after shooting the gun jammed.
As they figted with the jammed gun, they decided to take off and when the wanainchi realized it, started running after them, they managed to get the one with the gun and was lynched, while the second one known to be a brother to the deceased, escaped and is on the run.
“I want to commend the bravery of the local residents, and ask the public to always pass such timely information to help in the fight and prevention of crime” said Maate.
He added that inquiries are ongoing and efforts to get the second suspect arrested are being made so that is brought to book.
