In a pivotal effort to enhance infrastructure, the Rukungiri District Roads Committee convened today under the chairmanship of Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, the Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality. The meeting took place at the Rukungiri District Council Hall and brought together key local leaders, including Members of Parliament and the Chairman of LC 5, among others from the municipal and district leadership.

The primary focus of the meeting was to review the roads earmarked for renovation and construction, utilizing funds allocated by the government for the October to December quarter. Dr. Rutahigwa expressed his deep gratitude to the government of Uganda for its continuous financial support, which has facilitated significant infrastructure projects in the region. He particularly thanked the local leadership for their effective management of government funds from the previous quarter, which spanned July to September.

During his address, Dr. Rutahigwa highlighted several ongoing projects funded in the last quarter, including the Kazindiro-Kaburere Road, Omukishada-Ndago Road, and Kakinga-Muyanja Road. Although these projects are underway, he acknowledged the challenges that have delayed their completion. He also announced plans for new projects in the current quarter, such as the Bwanga Omukentomi to Kiganga Kishanda road, among many others reassuring residents that funding of UGX 305,111,773 has already been received, with an additional amount expected soon.

Woman MP Natukunda Medius Kaharata voiced her concerns regarding the adequacy of funding for road maintenance and renovation. She pointed out that while the government has provided financial resources, they remain insufficient compared to the extensive road networks requiring attention within the district. Kaharata urged the government to consider increasing the budget, especially for larger districts. She also addressed the pressing need for repairs and updates to district machinery, which she noted has been in use since 2010, thereby hindering effective road maintenance efforts.

Geoffrey Kyomukama, the Chairman of LC 5 for Rukungiri District, echoed the sentiments of his colleagues, expressing appreciation for the central government’s ongoing support in infrastructure development. He announced plans to approach the Minister of Works to request additional funding and new machinery to facilitate efficient operations. Kyomukama concluded that the meeting was productive, emphasizing that monitoring the progress of these projects is crucial to ensure their successful completion.

As the Rukungiri District Roads Committee moves forward, the commitment to improving local infrastructure remains strong, with leaders united in their efforts to address the community’s needs
