Two National Unity Platform (NUP) members, including the party’s head of mobilization, Edward Ssebufu, popularly known as Eddie Mutwe, have been remanded to Luzira Prison on charges of unlawful drilling and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Ssebufu, 43, a barber and resident of Lugoba in Kawempe Division, Kampala, appeared before the Kanyanya  court alongside his co-accused, 42-year-old driver Achileo Kivumbi, a resident of Nansana in Wakiso District.

Prosecution alleges that on February 12, 2025, at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule, Wandegeya, Kawempe Division, the two, together with others still at large, attended a meeting or assembly of persons held without the permission of the Minister.

The gathering was allegedly aimed at training or drilling participants in military exercises, movements, and evolutions, contrary to Section 45(1)(b) of the Penal Code Act.

In a second count, the duo is accused of conspiring to commit a felony. Court heard that on the same day and at the same venue, they allegedly agreed with others still at large to engage in unlawful drilling, an offence under Section 363 of the Penal Code Act.

Both Ssebufu and Kivumbi denied the charges when they appeared before the magistrate. After the plea was entered, the magistrate ordered their remand to  Prison until September 8, 2025, pending further hearing of the case.

The prosecution did not disclose in open court the nature of the alleged military exercises or the identities of the other suspects still at large.

Ssebuufu had Kivumbi had earlier on appeared at the Masaka court where they applied for to be released on bail pending trial on robbery charges .
