Kabale man perishes in accident after buying a coffin

NEWS– The Police in Kabale District have registered a hit and run fatal road accident that claimed the life of one person and injured another.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesman Elly Maate has confirmed the accident and identified thhe deceased as 20 year old Naboth Owomugabe a Boda boda rider and a resident of Nyakayenje village in Bubare Sub-county while the injured is 18 year old Henry Byamukama a mechanic and resident of Kagarama village both in Rubanda District.

Maate explained that the accident took place at Mwanjari along Kabale – Katuna highway in Kabale Municipality and involved motor vehicle registration number UA 325AL T whose driver’s particulars not yet established since he drove off immediately after the incident and fled to unknown place.

An eye witness said that the vehicle was from Kabale Town towards Katuna direction and recklessly overtook another vehicle that was moving the same direction and in the process, knocked down the motorcycle that was from Katuna towards Kabale Town direction and the rider died on spot, while the passenger was taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. 

It is reported that the motor vehicle and the driver is still at large, the dead body was taken to the home of the deceased from the scene and the motorcycle was smuggled from the scene by unknown people and is not yet recovered.

Maate said that the scene was however visited by the Police and documented it and statement of the injured was recorded and efforts to get the vehicle impounded are ongoing as investigations continue.

Information obtained by our reporter (unconfirmed reports) indicate that the deceased had just finished buying a coffin for a fallen relative and was headed to town to look for the means of transporting it home.

In another development, the territorial police in Kanungu arrested two suspects allegedly for stealing coffee. The first suspect is Oliver Kasangaki allegedly for stealing coffee from Tushabe Adelliah.

These are both residents of Nkunda cell Nkunda ward Kihihi town council Kanungu district. It’s alleged that, at an unknown time of the night of the 17/05/2025, unknown persons stole dry coffee from the compound of Tushabe Adelliah, who reported the case at Kihihi police station where a team of investigators together with the canine unit visited the scene.

PC Byaruhanga introduced T/P 258 Clara to the well preserved scene, picked up the scent and tracked for about 200m up to the store of one called Kasangaki Oliver and directly inside the store and sat, where the exhibit of dry coffee was recovered and identified by the complainant.

The second suspect is one Twakyire Herikan who was also arrested in Nkumbalaga cell Nyakatunguru ward Kihihi town council, through canine tracking after she stole fresh coffee from Muyambi Emerson’s garden.

This was in the night of 14/05/2025, tracked and arrested on the 15/05/25. Both case files under inquiries, upon which, the suspects will be produced before courts of law to answer charges accordingly.
