In a strong call to action, members of cooperatives across Uganda have been encouraged to enhance their collaboration for mutual growth and development. This message was delivered by Asiimwe Ivan, the General Secretary of the Uganda Cooperatives Alliance, during the 23rd Annual General Meeting of Buhunga Savings and Credit Cooperative Association (SACCO) held on March 14, 2026, in Karisizo town, Rukungiri District.

During the meeting, Ivan emphasized the importance of unity among cooperative members. He urged individuals to come together under cooperative structures that foster knowledge sharing and collective productivity. “When we work together, we can improve our savings and drive development within our families and communities,” he stated.

Ivan also spoke about the significance of hiring practices that prioritize experience and expertise in cooperative operations. According to him, employing knowledgeable individuals would be crucial in propelling cooperatives toward greater success. He further highlighted the need for continuous education within cooperatives, encouraging members to benchmark their practices against successful counterparts. This ongoing learning process is essential for introducing innovative products that can uplift both members and the cooperative as a whole.

The Chairperson of the Board of Governors for Buhunga SACCO, Byamukama Jackson, echoed Ivan’s sentiments, praising members for their commitment to the cooperative’s success. He outlined several achievements over the previous year, including a significant increase in membership, share capital, and savings. Additionally, Buhunga SACCO has expanded its loan portfolio, embraced digital outreach, and conducted various member training programs.

However, Jackson did not shy away from addressing ongoing challenges, such as dormant accounts, a lack of savings culture, and noncompliance among some members. He stressed the need for collective responsibility in tackling these issues to ensure the cooperative’s sustainable growth.

The meeting also featured remarks from Tayebwa Grace, the District Commercial Officer for Rukungiri. Grace lauded Buhunga SACCO for its cooperative spirit, which has positively affected the district. She stressed the importance of raising awareness among members about effective growth strategies and inspiring staff to maintain strong workplace relationships.

In closing, the meeting underscored a vital message: collaboration, continuous education, and a spirit of mutual support are essential for the advancement of cooperatives. The commitment demonstrated by Buhunga SACCO members serves as a model for other cooperatives in the region, highlighting the potential of collective effort in driving community development.
