The Ministry of National Water and Environment has officially launched the Regional Uganda Water and Environment Week in the Albert Management Zone, marking a pivotal initiative aimed at fostering environmental conservation across the region. The week-long activities kicked off 10th March, 2026 under the theme of sustainable practices and community engagement, emphasizing the necessity of preserving Uganda’s rich natural heritage.

During the launch event, Assistant Commissioner of National Water and Environment, Engineer Albert Olijabo, highlighted various activities that will take place throughout the week. These initiatives focus on critical areas such as irrigation strategies to combat climate change, riverbank restoration, and soil and water conservation techniques. Olijabo noted that income-generating activities like beekeeping and fish farming not only enhance livelihoods but also promote environmental sustainability.

In an effort to combat river silting, the ministry has initiated the planting of bamboo trees along River Biraara. This eco-friendly project aims to safeguard the river’s ecosystem and mitigate the detrimental effects of erosion. Olijabo urged residents to actively participate in these environmental projects, stressing that continuous protection is essential for maintaining a healthy environment.

Kamanzi emphasized that a healthy environment is foundational to improved soil quality, favorable climate conditions, and clean drinking water. “A good environment translates to better lives for our communities,” she stated.

Moreover, Kamanzi issued a firm warning to those who would engage in destructive practices against the environment, announcing that legal consequences will follow such actions. This commitment to enforcing environmental laws signals a robust approach to conservation.
