In a stirring interview today, Aliban Rukundo, the former aspirant for the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) in the Rubabo Constituency, publicly condemned Hon. Naboth Namanya for his recent declaration of support for President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 presidential elections. Rukundo expressed his deep disappointment, labeling Namanya’s decision as a betrayal to the opposition and detrimental to the hopes of the people of Rubabo.
“It is truly painful to witness a fellow freedom fighter aligning with a government that has long been criticized for its repressive tactics against its own citizens,” Rukundo stated. This strong sentiment came in response to videos circulating on social media, where Namanya was seen distributing National Resistance Movement (NRM) branded t-shirts to constituents and declaring his backing for Museveni’s leadership.
Rukundo, who faced Namanya in the recent PFF flagbearer elections—where Namanya emerged victorious—appeared resolute in his message. He called upon the people of Rubabo to unequivocally reject Namanya’s actions, emphasizing the need for solidarity among the opposition forces at this critical juncture.
“The people of Rubabo must rise and say no to this betrayal,” Rukundo urged. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a united front against the ruling government, particularly in light of ongoing political challenges facing the opposition. Rukundo’s remarks resonate deeply with those who feel disillusioned by the political maneuvers of some former opposition leaders.
Adding to his sentiments, Rukundo referenced the ongoing imprisonment of prominent opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, asserting that it is disheartening to see strong opposition members seeking support from a government that imprisons its critics. “How can we move forward as a nation when those who once stood for our values are now seeking the very support of the oppressors?” he lamented.
As tensions rise ahead of the 2026 elections, Rukundo’s call for resistance and unity within the opposition has found a receptive audience among his supporters, who remain committed to fostering a democratic environment in Uganda. The political landscape in Rubabo is poised for significant developments as elections approach.
