Residents of Rukungiri convened today for the district launch of the Tarehe Sita campaign at Kakonkoma Primary School. This significant event precedes the official celebration scheduled for February 6, 2026, in Kabale. The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including retired Major General Kale Kayihura, UPDF officials, local stakeholders, religious leaders, headteachers, and community members.
Brigadier General Justus Rukundo, the UPDF Commander in Rukungiri, delivered an inspiring address emphasizing the campaign’s theme of Defending the Gains of Revolution. He articulated the importance of honoring the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and called for national unity, peace, and socio-economic transformation. Rukundo revealed that several development projects are underway in the Kigezi Region, highlighting Rukungiri as a primary beneficiary.
Among the key projects mentioned are the installation of an incinerator at Rukungiri Health Center IV Rwamahwa and the construction of toilets at Rwakabengo Health Center III, new classroom blocks are being built at Kakonkoma Primary School in municipality and also at Kikarara Primary School in Rujumbura. Staff houses are under construction at Ngoma Primary School and Ibanda Health Center II in Nyarushanje. Continuingly there has been distribution of educational materials, road renovations, and health camps are also part of the ongoing initiatives.

Major General Jim Muhwezi, the Minister of Security and Chief Guest, expressed his gratitude towards the UPDF for its dedication to protecting Uganda. He urged the community to support the army, highlighting the sacrifices that have allowed them to enjoy peace today. He also encouraged local residents to reflect on the work done by President Museveni and the UPDF, noting the hopes of converting skeptics into supporters through tangible achievements.
Also addressing the crowd was Major General Don Nabaasa, who delivered a message on behalf of Chief Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kinerugaba. He stressed the importance of remembrance, urging residents to appreciate the sacrifices made for their freedoms.
Retired General Kale Kayihura, former IGP who took over as Chief Guest, after Major Gen Jim Muhwezi left due to other programs, thanked the citizens for their continued support for Major General Muhwezi and emphasized the need to remember those who fought for peace in Uganda.
In closing, local leaders, including RDC Bron Kikanshemeza and Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama, praised the UPDF’s contributions to Rukungiri. They encouraged residents to safeguard these gains as they prepare for elections, reminding them that their votes are vital in sustaining the progress made. The celebration marks a pivotal moment of reflection and commitment to the future of the community.
